What Is a Tab Tension Projection Screen?
The mechanism that keeps a retractable screen's image surface flat, explained.
The Tensioning Mechanism
A tab tension screen uses small tabs or cables attached along both side edges of the fabric, which pull outward as the screen extends — keeping the surface taut and flat across its full width, not just top-to-bottom.
Why Flatness Matters
A screen surface with any waviness scatters light unevenly and is most noticeable on higher-gain or darker fabrics and on wider screens, where even a small amount of sag becomes visible from a normal seating distance.
Tab Tension vs Standard Motorized
A standard motorized screen without side tensioning is a simpler mechanism and typically costs less — a reasonable choice for smaller screens and everyday presentation use. Tab tensioning is the better choice for larger diagonals, home theatre setups, or any installation where the flattest possible image surface matters.
